Coaching Peak Performers: Training Cirque du Soleil (2023)
In September 2023, an email landed in my inbox that I honestly almost deleted, mistaking it for spam. It was from Brian Beech, the Head Coach of Cirque du Soleil’s acclaimed show Ovo. They were coming to Berlin and looking for an expert to run specialized self-defense and resilience workshops for their artists and staff at the Mercedes-Benz Arena (now Uber Arena).
Once the initial surprise settled and we connected, we quickly aligned our visions. Training the cast of Cirque du Soleil presents a fascinating dynamic: How do you teach physical sovereignty to individuals who already possess absolute, world-class mastery over their own bodies?
To accommodate their demanding, high-pressure production schedule, we customized the formats and ran an initial late-night workshop on Thursday, followed by an advanced session on Friday afternoon directly inside the arena. The focus was not on basic fitness - they already have that covered - but on translating their extraordinary physical intelligence into the context of self-protection, boundary setting, and tactical de-escalation under stress.
The engagement concluded with a generous invitation to watch their spectacular performance of Ovo, followed by a memorable backstage meeting with the participants still in their vibrant costumes. It was a profound reminder that true peak performance - whether in the boardroom, on the streets, or under the spotlights of a global arena - always relies on the exact same foundation: absolute mental clarity, adaptability, and mutual trust.
