Defeat is Not an Option: Forging the KMB Mental Coaching Program (Spring 2020)
Sometimes, reality delivers the ultimate stress test.
In December 2019, after years of building my client base part-time alongside a demanding corporate job, I finally took the leap. I handed in my notice to become a full-time, self-employed Personal Trainer and Krav Maga instructor. My contract officially ended in February 2020. I had the keys to the new KMB Dojo, a full schedule, and absolute momentum.
Days later, the global COVID-19 lockdowns hit. Overnight, "contact combat" became literally illegal.
It was a massive setback, but honestly, my primary concern was for those who had it much worse - people facing severe health crises, deep isolation, or financial ruin. In Krav Maga, one of our core principles is: "Defeat is not an option." You do not freeze; you assess the new reality, you pivot, and you keep moving forward. My goal remained the same: I wanted to help people. If I couldn't train them physically, I would train them mentally.
The Shared DNA of Krav Maga and Stoicism
The resulting KMB Mental Coaching program is deeply influenced by Stoic philosophy. Stoicism and Krav Maga share the exact same DNA: neither attempts to be performative art or theoretical debate. They are profoundly practical. They are tools for survival and sovereignty in the real world. During a time of global panic, my students didn't need empty motivational quotes - they needed a highly structured, tactical framework for their minds.
The Empty Dojo Sessions
I had the dojo space, I just couldn't invite anyone in. Leveraging my background in digital creation, I set up the lights, camera, and audio equipment in the empty gym. Over the next few weeks, I designed the curriculum, wrote the scripts, and hit record.
The final result was a comprehensive digital course: 31 individual videos totaling nearly 5 hours of runtime, complete with PDF worksheets and reading assignments broken down into three core modules: Radical Honesty, Tactical Strategy, and Unbreakable Mentality.
(Side note: The hardest part wasn't the curriculum design - it was the post-production. Spending hours in the editing room listening to yourself talk is a mental endurance drill of its own. But the effort paid off, and shortly after, I was even hired to create and produce two complete online courses for the extracurricular activities of a school in Berlin.)
