Teaching the Teachers: Instructor Development at Paragon (June 2024)

In June 2024, I was invited by Paragon, a highly respected martial arts academy in Berlin, to conduct an intensive seminar for their own coaching staff. Their objective was clear: to pressure-test their current Krav Maga curriculum and elevate their instructional standards to the highest possible level. Training other instructors is a unique privilege, but it also requires a highly analytical approach.

Rather than delivering a rigid, pre-packaged seminar, we began with a diagnostic phase. I ran the coaching team through a series of practical, high-stress drills across various Krav Maga domains. This allowed me to assess their baseline, observe their mechanics, and take detailed notes on their execution. For the remainder of an intense, 8-hour, almost non-stop session, we surgically addressed the specific developmental areas, tactical gaps, and problem-solving strategies I had identified during the initial assessment.

The drive, focus, and dedication of the Paragon team were truly exceptional. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to step out of "instructor mode" and put yourself back into the vulnerable position of a student. But their willingness to be critiqued, unlearn, and refine their craft was a testament to their absolute professionalism.

A huge thank you to the academy for their trust, their relentless effort, and their commitment to continuous growth.

"True mastery requires the humility to keep learning. Sometimes a teacher, always a student."
