Testing the Limits: Elite Certification & The Championship (2016/2017)

Michael Rüppel is globally recognized as an absolute authority in real-world security and Krav Maga. His expertise spans VIP protection for heads of state and international public figures, developing tactical training programs for U.S. Homeland Security, and teaching at Israel’s renowned LOTAR Counter-Terrorism Tactical School. For years, I had followed his work, drawing deep inspiration from his uncompromising standards.

In 2016, seeking to elevate my own capabilities, I reached out to Michael to ask if I could attend his rigorous instructor course. I won’t sugarcoat it: the program was a grueling physical and mental crucible. Having trained for years under a different Krav Maga organization, my muscle memory was deeply wired to different tactical approaches. Under extreme pressure during the final exam, I reverted to those old habits and missed the passing mark by just a few points.

It was a profoundly humbling experience and a stark lesson in the difficulty of "unlearning." However, resilience is about how you respond to failure. Michael gave me the opportunity to recalibrate. I took the time to deeply internalize the new methodology, returned a few months later with absolute focus, and successfully passed the test.

In 2017, I decided to push my boundaries even further by entering a full-contact championship during his summer camp. This tournament was less about perfect technique and entirely about willpower, adrenaline management, and maintaining cognitive clarity under extreme physical duress. In the final round, I faced off against a highly skilled Dutch instructor - who was also the defending champion - and won.

The true reward was receiving the medal from Michael’s own mentor, Dr. Dennis Hanover, one of the most respected pioneers of Israeli martial arts. I didn't step into that tournament because I wanted to be a fighter. I did it to truly understand what happens to the human mind and body under absolute peak stress. The lessons I learned there about regulating the nervous system and executing the "Mental Pivot" directly inform how I consult and train my clients today.
